The Challenge
Given the UK’s rich history of coal mining, many areas may contain uncharted or poorly documented mine workings, posing potential instability risks to future developments. Our project in the North East required a thorough assessment to identify and mitigate such risks for a proposed food store development.
The Solution
We conducted a detailed desk based Coal Mining Risk Assessment and collaborated with the Mining Remediation Authority to develop an investigation strategy. Using our own rig and skilled operators, we advanced boreholes to depths of 35 metres across the site footprint, achieving full soil and rock core recovery. Our consultants logged the findings on-site, ensuring accurate geotechnical and environmental data collection.
The Outcome
Our comprehensive investigation not only assisted in the foundation design but also satisfied pre-commencement legacy coal mining and contaminated land planning conditions. The project proceeded with confidence, mitigating potential risks and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
